The hotel in the Ivalidenstraße in Berlin-Mitte is a botanical ornament where in the city-stress can be quickly forgotten. Carl Loyal, career changers in the hotel industry have the Idea of living with garden around eight years now. The trace of time on the monumental-protected former residential building from 1845 has been specially preserved. The 20 rooms are pretty romantic, small as well as the large suites.

Small escapes: "Honigmod Hotel" and "Honigmond Garden Hotel" in Berlin
Two islands in the calm sea of urban from Roland Mischke 2nd February 2008
The houses are collector's pieces, the restaurant is an insider tip. And some guests play the piano in the evening.
The fountain ripples, two cats pursue the watercourse and frogs croaks. Birds chirp, colorful fish swimming in the pond, in which a bridge made of wood planks arched over it. Palm trees spread their leaves, the wind whisper on the olive tree and the lemons bloom. Is it Tuscany? No, Berlin - in the middle of City center. "Can't get any more in the middle" quips owner Carl Loyal as he sits in the garden of his monument-protected courtyard (Hofremise) of 1845. Two hotels under one name and one management which are 250 meters apart, both are situated near the Friedrichstraße, a calm island in the restless urban islands sea. The barn area is one of Berlin's oldest neighbourhoods.
Hotel industry as a hobby, says Carl Loyal from Bonn, MBA, and was long in the closest leadership circle in the headquarters of Siemens in Munich. As the turn comes, he decided to dropout. He went to Berlin with a small fortune and bought real estate in the Middle district. "Those were good business," he recalls. "I still benefit from it. The hotel industry came more by chance, I enjoyed it." In 1999 he began, it was the start of a new life. The hotel restaurant is considered an insider tip, although the owner does not advertise it. The "Honigmond" restaurant is furnished with simple old wooden tables and wooden chairs in the cafe style, with dimmed lamps and warm candlelight. In the rear dining room is an old piano, who wants to play it, do it easy. Government party-rounds meet occasionally here since the government district is just around the corner. The guests stay longer for it is nice and sedate. Carl Loyal emphasizes details. "All things have to agree with everything, as in the private things." justifies Dr. Loyal. Among his 20 employees are almost all female, "because women are generally friendly, and friendliness is the most important thing in the hotel business." Although the "Honigmond" have only 50 rooms, the reception desk is staffed throughout the night. In general, a ministering spirit is always there when guests need something. Four stars stood to his hotel, identified from a Hotel Expert. "But why would I want it? The guests are happy and we are satisfied. That's the main thing," says the owner. In every room hang at least two oil paintings, beautiful replica of Rembrandt and other artists. The ground-floor garden rooms are always well booked, as well as the rooms on the first floor in both houses. After the construction of the buildings in the 19 Century, it was resided from those who have personalities and lived in grand style. The house in the Tieckstraße, recently in GDR times, the "singles dorm" of the Stasi, was handled by a designer on its external skin with devotion. She scraped off four layers of plaster and covered the facade in glaze technology. With its apricot-color plaster and illuminated by "Schinkel" lamps (historicizing filaments in old Berlin-style), is it an optical eye-catcher. Almost every room has a different layout, a different wall color - from deep green to about light-yellow up to oxblood-red and even other ceiling moldings. Lion heads and faces looking tender to the visitors. The wood furniture comes from special designer company in Berlin and Munich. His guests appreciate the fact that the lobby is furnished with materials from the theater fund, that the century-old wooden floors has been carefully restored and bathrooms with such innovation, night light with automatic insulation. Those are the little things in both old buildings that make them special. Also a tradition from the GDR period is well-kept here: At the time of the "Borsig-Eck", they are well known for homemade meatballs with boiled potatoes. "We still offer it, and that pleases many people who were there earlier," says Carl Loyal.

It is a little bit unusual, beginning with a restaurant review with a quotation from a great social democrat. But since the appearance of another, not even small, Socialists will decide this text on a melancholy evening in Berlin, perhaps it makes sense. "Nothing comes from nothing, and little is permanent," has Willy Brandt once said. In the first, he is surely right, for the latter observation, we know one of the few exceptions: The restaurant Honigmond in Berlin's center. Since the nineties, it is what it is: a pleasant restaurant and cafe with pleasant people before and behind the counter. The food is predictable, the main map has changed little for years. Whenever we want to hav a Swiss cheese fondue, meatballs or coq au vin, we went to the Borsigstraße, a small side street in the Torstraße, away from the tourist streets around the Oranienburgerstraße. Friends always come back because of the Wiener schnitzel here and want to eat anything else. Others appreciate the good but inexpensive wines. What do all have in common: In the light of the candles of the Honigmond was nobody important, the great performances of the Berlin evenings are given elsewhere. Although we often see a few tourists, as the Honigmond has a beautiful hotel in the same house and is recommended in guidebooks. But this one can live well in the Borsigstraße. In a tradition of the most pleasant ordinariness. The Honigmod already existed before Berlin was the Berlin Republic, and it is a little too far from the Reichstag, for the politics in the last ten years could see. Unlike, say, the wine bars Nope Glinka in the street where we now also host important faces. The Honigmond is anything but remained as it was, we thought. And so it was clear that we wanted to eat there again, now that we know that we will leave Berlin after a long time and no longer have many nights to say goodbye. We were at a table near the bar (a beautiful old wooden Buffet) set and reminds us. For example, the fact that we have once gave to a friend an evening wedding in the Honigmond. The people from the Honigmond knew it was a special day for them, and therefore decorate their table a little. The friends never forget it, and if they did not live in Munich, they'd often come to the Berlin Borsigstraße. But you can not have it all. That evening, we wanted to take our time and started with the soup of the dinner menu for four euros. The red lentil soup with sprouts alternates between German and Indian flavors and was - very good. Nothing else can be said about the celery-apple soup. Fresh, strong and thick, just right. Then it should be a classic: coq au vin (10 euro 50). Red wine braised chicken with bacon and mushrooms. Who knows what it was, the court was really good, but somehow we were not as enthusiastic as in previous years. So it is indeed often with things that have been long appreciated - then you need to change something. So but the ticket: Salmon and cod fillet on spinach with yellow pepper sauce. Very good fish, very good sauce. Good choice. So we waited at the ticket, a pear tart to chocolate Amaretto mousse with raspberry sauce (6 euros) and have been for our efforts to change old habits rewarded once again. We ordered an espresso, looked into the restaurant, as the door opened up room for twenty-Berlin political journalists filed past us. They had eaten here and talked with Franz Müntefering. Müntefering, said a colleague, had the Honigmond discovered long ago.

A revolution in travel publishing, this exciting new series draws out the vitality and uniqueness of the world's greatest cities. 9 Hotels - No.1: Honigmond Garden Hotel (Honigmond Hotel): "Dr. Carl Loyal was painting the walls of the first hotel then the Beatles 1993 "Honeymoon Song" was aired on the radio. His literal translation became the name of the hotel he acquired to provide affordable accommodation for young people. Before 1989, the restaurant on the corner of Borsigstrasse and Tieckstrasse had been popular with opposition DDR politicians and as a result was shut down by the Stasi for reasons of "overcrowding", but in 1999 Loyal reopened it, along with the hotel. After discovering a defunct building with a wild inner garden on nearby Invalidenstrasse in 2000, he opened his second establishment, the Honigmond Garden Hotel. Ten rooms, six garden cabins and three suites all designed and furnished by Loyal provide comfort with a genuine feel of home. Loyal believes in an honesty system, so there is a piggy bank for guests to pay the minimal charge for whine or hot drinks from the mini-bar in the communal lounge. He lives on the premises, and his love of gardening, design and art pervades the building. Frogs and fish inhabit a garden pond crosses by a Japanese-style bridge. Loyal has clearly hit on a winning formula: "Some guests like it here so much they never leave the hotel for the duration of their Berlin stay. They invite their friends over and hang out in the garden instead."
